Would you like to volunteer?

We welcome your involvement in any amount that your time and interest allows. Our primary goal is to have volunteers happy in what they're doing. We've been told by a lot of people that "this is a fun place. Although we have a number of volunteers, we still have a lot of volunteer needs:

A. Geddes-Piper House Museum

1. Docents -

- For Geddes-Piper tours throughout the year (usually on weekdays). Time involved - approximately 2 hours each tour.

- Regular Saturday docent, May-October. The schedule is Saturday 1-4

You can do either or both of these tasks once or several times throughout the tourist season - it's up to you. You will always have an experienced docent with you.

- For fall house tour, the first Saturday in October - this will be our 38th year!

2. Helping with care of items in collection

3. For those with background in materials culture, researching the provenance of items in collection (historic clothing, porcelain, etc), in preparation for cataloging.

B. Library

1. Library aide tasks:

- Clipping, pasting and labeling obituaries, or other materials.

- Indexing publications.

- Typing the text of archival documents, or handwritten articles.

- Sorting through handwritten notes and making copies to place in subject files.

- Type spine labels.

- Covering documents and maps in archival sleeves and protective covering.

- A variety of other tasks as needed - all are done with the supervision of staff or a senior volunteer.

2. Research

- Experienced volunteer genealogists or researchers to conduct research for which the Society will receive a fee.

- Researchers also needed to tackle projects for which we either need to find more information, or pull together the information we have, into "doorways" to local history.

C. Events, public relations, book and map shop

1. Tour Coordinator - assisting with marketing of Geddes-Piper House for tour groups throughout year (we can do the mailings, etc, we need someone to identify and solicit the groups, and tour or bus companies, and follow up with telephone calls).

2. Event Coordination and assistance - we have several events throughout the year for which we would love to have assistance in planning, marketing, and coordination. Any help is welcome! We can also use bakers.

3. Public Relations - again, we would love to have assistance in writing press releases, articles, and getting them out to media and organizations.

4. Book and Map Shop Coordinator - keep track of reproduction (of maps), inventory, sales, and shelf appeal, and make suggestions on future acquisitions.

5. Outreach - staff a table for the Society at special events and festivals throughout Kent County.

D. Office tasks

1. Bulk mail assistance.

2. Organizing and labeling files.

E. Facilities & garden

1. Handyman type tasks around the Geddes-Piper House. (We need to cover our windows in UV protected mylar!)

2. Help and care with our backyard and landscaping.
