Chambers House
Queen Street
The Chambers house appears to have been built at the same time as the Nicholson House next door.
Benjamin Chambers was an attorney in Chestertown who was later a general in the militia during the battle at Caulk's Field. When the Chambers moved to Widehall in 1810, the house and lot were transferred to his son, Ezekiel Forman Chambers, one of Kent County's five United States senators. Later for forty-four years (1877-1910) the property was owned by Chester Parish, and occupied by the rectors and their families. The exterior cornice is composed of four courses of molded brick, which form a classic Doric capital.
The house was purchased by David and Anne Singer in 1994. In the first part of their restoration project, the house underwent much needed structural work to the foundation. The living room has been the focus of attention at the present time -- the original mantelpiece has been restored and a great deal of attention has been paid to the bookcases. A two story rear addition has enhanced the living space available for the use of a busy, modern family and its pets. |
