Greenwood House
Chestertown

This frame house, newly restored and new to our tour, was built shortly after the Civil War. It is named for Chestertown builder John Greenwood.

He left a handwritten note on a piece of lumber which he likely placed under the top of the stairs during a 1905 renovation. Greenwood states that he moved into the house in 1876 but does not say if he built it. In the 1905 note Greenwood said "I may be gone but not forgotten" as indeed he is not.

In 2003, the current owners bought the house which had fallen into disrepair as a rental duplex. According longtime Chestertonians, the house at one time had a less than respectable reputation, and the renovation was welcomed.
