Robert Reid House
Chestertown

The Reid house is a two and a half story, brick Flemish bond, Federal period tradesman house built in 1782 by Chestertown blacksmith/gunsmith Robert Reid, or Reed, who was in partnership with Elisha Winters. Together they provided gun barrels for the whole province of Maryland during the American Revolution.

Preservation, Inc. did the initial restoration in 1975. Mrs. Rosalind Havemeyer then bought and restored the interior. Further restorations and rear additions were designed by restoration consultant Michael Bourne in 1992 and 2005 working with the present owners, who have owned the house since 1985. This house includes a number of original features, staircases, fireplaces and pine paneled partition walls. Teapot and decoy collections are also displayed with a rear, four window-wide, expansive garden view. Mrs. Hornaday spearheaded the Chestertown Beautification Committee whose work influenced many improvements to the town's streetscape as well as private gardens.
